I have slightly modified the incorrect translation by William Weaver, by restoring the letter of the original Italian text that makes clear the optical reference to the camera obscura: instead of “this turns you upside down,” Weaver translates “and this is what disorients you” (meaning the narrator); but in the Italian text, the pronoun “you” is clearly referred to “shadows.”
