Shadow Plays: Virtual Realities in an Analog World

Chapter 5, Note 30

The New York Times, May 3, 1864: “We also observe that almost the first thing he [Garibaldi] did on landing in England was to receive a visit from MAZZINI [sic, all caps], who, as our readers are aware, is now under a very dark cloud. But we shall not attempt to unravel the mystery until we hear further of it and of him.” An engraving showing the arrival of Garibaldi at the Townhall, Bargate, Southampton, published in the Illustrated London News on April 16, 1864, gives an idea of the enthusiasm surrounding Garibaldi’s visit.
