Shadow Plays: Virtual Realities in an Analog World

Chapter 4, Note 36

Belzoni kept performing his delineations of Le Brun in the following years in various cities, including in Scotland and Ireland, until November 1813. See, for example, Saunders’s News-Letter (September 18, 1809): “A new Experiment in Optics called Somatus Copie (sic), as the substance of the Figure, and not the Shadow only, will turn round, and represent itself on all sides to the spectators.” Available at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001057/18090918/003/0002. In Chester, in May 1810, one could see “a grand display of Spectrology, by Signor Belzoni’s apparatus,” according to the Chester Courant (May 8, 1810).
