By the time Belzoni, as we shall see, achieved a different kind of notoriety, in 1821, his legendary feat of strength had grown to even greater, and preposterous, proportions, without losing its exotic flavor: “Mr. Belzoni was doomed, like some of the noble animals of lower nature, to bear upon his colossal frame, no fewer, if we mistake not, than 20 or 22 persons...moving across the stage as stately as the elephant with the Persian warriors.” The Gentleman’s Magazine 91, no. 1 (1821), 41.
