In Das Kapital, Karl Marx used the term in order to characterize the fetishism of the commodity: the “phantasmagorical form” (phantasmagorische Form) that human relations (“the value-relation of the products of labor”) assume, as embedded in commodities—things to be desired, acquired, and consumed.
